Youth participation

The best way to support young people is by giving them a voice and an active role in the quest for positive change.

We encourage youth participation through our 2 programs — Frontyard Youth Advisory Committee, and Youth Action Group.

Through these programs, we give young people a platform to be involved in the decisions that directly affect them and make a difference.

Frontyard Youth Advisory Committee (FYAC)

Since its establishment in 2017, FYAC members have used their personal experiences to influence change through consultations, community education and advocacy.

Members represent MCM at events and conferences, co-deliver education sessions with Frontyard and assist with a variety of projects.

The committee is made up of past and present users of our services, which provides incredibly valuable insights into the changes needed in the community.

Through their lived experiences, each member has a unique outlook on the services offered to those experiencing homelessness. They also possess a passion to reduce stigma and promote understanding of the causes and effects of youth homelessness.

With this information, FYAC provides direction on not only how our services can be improved, but how external bodies could further develop as well.

If you would like to book a community education session or consultation, or for any questions, please contact us on 03 9453 8518.

Youth Action Group (YAG)

YAG is a group of young leaders aged 18 to 24 who are passionate about raising the profile of young people in Melbourne.

Members of the group champion 2 projects per year aimed at affecting positive change in the community.

The ultimate goals of the YAG are to foster Melbourne’s next generation of civic leaders, build connections between diverse groups of young people and make a difference in Melbourne.

The projects

Members are given complete freedom on the type of projects they would like to undertake during their year. The group works collaboratively with other young people to tackle a range of social issues to:

  • influence community attitudes
  • assess current trends
  • influence policies
  • promote accomplishments of Melbourne’s young people
  • act as a strong voice for many

Other services

While the YAG is not a consultation group, from time to time they advise government departments, corporates and NGOs about the issues affecting young people.

Information provided by the team can aid in the development of ideas, projects and youth-led strategies.

Who can become a member?

YAG is open to all young people aged 18 to 24 who are living in Melbourne. Chosen leaders receive training on areas such as leadership, public speaking, advocacy and campaign management. Members are briefed on major social issues and have the opportunity to network and learn from emerging and established leaders.

To join, individuals must:

  • attend training
  • take part in meetings (minimum of 2 hours a week or fortnight)
  • work well in a group
  • be open minded
  • have great communication skills
  • be enthusiastic about the cause

For more information or to find out what YAG are up to, please contact 03 9453 8518.
