Making the transition to independence

Leaving out-of-home care and transitioning to adult independence is an important time.

While support is provided in the years leading up to this transition, navigating the process can be challenging.

To assist with this change, there are a range of supports available to help young people set themselves up for the future.

Better Futures Intake and Access

The Better Futures Intake and Access (previously known as The Leaving Care Hotline) is a hotline for people who have left out-of-home care in Victoria.

The hotline is run by Frontyard Youth Services and can be used to connect to the nearest support program.

The Better Futures Intake and Access team is available 9am to 8pm weekdays and 10am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays. Give us a call on 1300 532 846 or submit an enquiry.

Providing advice and referrals to a range of support services, the hotline can assist with:

  • staying in existing accommodation or finding a new place
  • staying in or returning to study
  • employment and applying for vocational training
  • reconnecting with family
  • financial help
  • links to other support services

Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA)

One service the Leaving Care Hotline refers young people to is the Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA).

MCM is the Victorian provider of TILA through Frontyard Youth Services.

TILA is a one-off payment from the Australian Government to help young people who are leaving out-of-home care.
