Meet Cat, an MCM Recovery Coach supporting participants to overcome mental health barriersĀ

1 June 2022

As a registered NDIS provider, MCM has been delivering Recovery Coach services for almost three years, supporting participants in taking control of their lives and overcoming mental health barriers.

We spoke to Kat, one of MCM’s Recovery Coaches based in the Loddon Mallee and Macedon Ranges region about her role and what it means to be a Recovery Coach.

Recovery Coach Bendigo

Being involved in supporting and guiding our participants to reach their goals is definitely very rewarding, especially seeing them grow and further develop with their mental health.

Kat, MCM Recovery Coach

What is your background and what led you to the role of a Recovery Coach?

For the past 4 years prior to commencing my role at MCM I worked in community services in high-risk youth work. What led me to this role was reading about what Recovery Coaches do and the work that they provide to support people with their mental health; it was something I was intrigued in pursuing further.

What does a typical day as a Recovery Coach look like?

Due to the inclusive and diverse nature of our role a typical day can change on a daily basis. As a Recovery Coach our role is participant-led in working towards their goals within their comfort zone. One day could be purely focused on meeting participants in the community, at programs they may be partaking in or at their home, the day then could shift with an afternoon then spent formally supporting the participants in having their voices heard in care team meetings and professional meetings with co-service providers.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

The outcomes of the work we do with our participants! Being involved in supporting and guiding our participants to reach their goals is definitely very rewarding, especially seeing them grow and further develop with their mental health. This can be seen by witnessing the participants taking control of their lives and succeeding in any aspirations and goals that they may have.

What is the most rewarding part of working for MCM?

Being a part of two amazing teams! Being based in the Loddon Mallee and Macedon Ranges Region I am so fortunate to have the Recovery Coach team as well the Support Coordinators team in Bendigo. But also, being a part of an inclusive workplace that has provided services to participants in remote locations that may not have had these supports prior.

Any great outcomes for participants you have supported?

Yes! I have a few participants now who have been successful in gaining employment, studying and reaching their NDIS goals.
