MCM (Melbourne City Mission) has today issued a formal apology acknowledging the harm caused by past forced adoption practices.

The apology recognises the deep and lasting impact of these practices on mothers, fathers, adoptive parents, carers, and children who were impacted by forced adoptions in the care of MCM and is part of a broader organisational response developed through careful reflection, policy review, and consultation.

“We acknowledge the pain and trauma experienced by those who were separated from their children, parents, and families through forced adoption,” said MCM Group CEO Vicki Sutton.

“This apology is a vital step in taking responsibility for our past and reaffirming our commitment to truth-telling, transparency, and healing. We stand with those who were impacted and are committed to ensuring their voices are heard and respected.”

MCM’s response includes access to historical records, referral pathways to support services, and internal training to ensure a trauma-informed approach for those engaging with individuals affected by forced adoption.
