Statement about the attacks on Jewish people at Bondi Beach

Like many in the community, we at MCM have been overwhelmed by the news of the terrorist attacks on the Jewish people celebrating Chanukah at Bondi Beach on Sunday night.

We have heard Jewish people in Australia and around the world reporting rising anti-Semitism over the past few years and expressing fear that this would result in violence against Jewish people. That it has happened as feared, at a celebration of religious freedom, is an outrage.

To those who died, to those who were injured, to those who have lost loved ones, to those impacted by this attack, and to the entire Jewish community, our entire MCM Group—encompassing MCM, MCM Housing, Hester Hornbrook Academy, and Quantum Support Services—honours you, offers our unconditional support, and grieves with you.

In our experience, the road to any form of healing starts with establishing trust. Trust requires vulnerability. It requires openness. It requires deep honesty. It requires self-reflection. It requires truth telling. It requires listening—really listening. So, we urge everybody to listen to Jewish people about the direct and indirect impact of these attacks. To focus on how you might support those impacted. To reflect on whether our own behaviours contribute to an environment of fear for others. To show love, to be kind, and to be present for those who need us to support them.
