MCM proudly supports the Treaty process being led by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and Traditional Owner Groups across the state. We stand with First Nations Peoples in their decades-long fight for justice, truth and self-determination.
Treaty is a historic opportunity to right the wrongs of the past and to build a more just, equal, and compassionate Victoria. It is a chance to walk alongside First Nations Peoples and support them to shape the laws, policies and systems that directly affect them.
As a healing-oriented, state-wide organisation that has worked to make a positive difference in people’s lives for almost 170 years, MCM knows that individuals and communities thrive when they have the freedom and authority to determine their own path.
Since 2019, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria has provided a strong, democratic voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It demonstrates the power of self-determination, ensuring that First Peoples, not governments, are the experts and decision-makers when it comes to their own communities, culture and Country.
Treaty will help build a more equitable future for everyone. When communities have the power to make decisions for themselves, outcomes improve - not only for First Nations Peoples but for all Victorians. International experience shows that embedding Indigenous leadership and decision-making into laws and services strengthens communities, enhances wellbeing, and fosters shared prosperity.
At MCM, our vision is for a fair, inclusive and just Victoria where everyone has equal access to opportunity and self-determination. Through our Reconciliation Action Plan, we are committed to:
Listening and learning from First Nations voices to guide how we work, advocate and deliver services.
Embedding cultural safety and responsiveness across our programs and workplaces.
Amplifying and supporting Aboriginal-led initiatives that promote truth-telling, healing and systemic reform.
Standing publicly and consistently in support of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and the journey to Treaty.
MCM stands proudly with First Peoples in calling for a fair and respectful process - one that acknowledges the truth of our shared history and helps create a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are not only heard, but lead the way.
