What to look for in a coordinator who understands your needs and puts your safety first

Choosing the right Specialist Support Coordinator (SSC) is one of the most important decisions you can make in your NDIS journey, especially if you have complex support needs. A good coordinator doesn’t just know the NDIS system, they understand people. They listen, advocate, and walk alongside you to help you reach your goals.

Here’s what to consider when choosing an SSC:

Experience and expertise

Look for a provider with a strong background supporting people with complex disabilities, including acquired brain injuries, dual diagnoses, or justice involvement. An experienced coordinator will understand how to work across systems like health, mental health, housing, and justice.

Reputation and reliability

Your safety matters. Choose a provider with a proven track record of ethical practice. Check for registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and don’t hesitate to ask for references or testimonials. You can also visit the NDIA website to learn more about approved providers.

A participant-centred approach

Good SSCs focus on choice and control. They support your goals and respect your voice. They’ll explain your options, involve you in decisions, and work at your pace.

Community and social inclusion

Support coordination isn’t just about services it’s about engaging in life. Your coordinator should help you build relationships, access your local community, and pursue the things that matter to you. This could mean finding a social group, joining a sports club, or reconnecting with cultural support.

Focus on quality of life

Ask how they measure success. A great SSC looks beyond checklists; they focus on how well you're doing in life. Are you safer? Happier? More independent? These indicators help shape meaningful outcomes.

By taking the time to choose the right Specialist Support Coordinator, you’re setting yourself up for more than just a smooth NDIS journey, you’re building a stronger, more connected future.
