About the program

Melbourne City Mission’s Youth Foyers provide integrated support programs for young people who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness throughout Victoria. Youth Foyers concentrate on breaking the cycle of homelessness through the application of the Advantage Thinking practice framework with a significant emphasis on creating direct links to employment, education, and training providers. Young people in the program have access to subsidised independent accommodation, intensive case management and broader program supports.

About the role

  • Assist MCM Youth Foyer staff in establishing a safe, secure, and healthy living environment by being a positive role model.
  • To assist in developing interpersonal skills, healthier relationships and lifestyle choices through informal supports and mentoring.
  • To liaise regularly with the Foyer staff on issues affecting the residents or building, including reporting maintenance issues.
  • To contact the MCM On-Call in the case of emergency outside of regular business hours. 
  • To act in the best interests of the young people.

The Residential Support Volunteer is not a paid position. The opportunity to contribute to a young person’s life and financial incentives can make the role of The Residential Support Volunteer appealing and rewarding. It is important that prospective Residential Support Volunteers be motivated by the desire to work with young people rather than, primarily, by access to subsidised housing.

Skills and experience

  • A basic understanding of youth safety, stages of development, and patterns of behaviour.
  • The ability to build strong rapport with the young people and engage with them consistently utilizing strength-based approaches.
  • Respect and maintain the confidentiality and privacy of the young people.
  • Communicate effectively with allocated Case Workers, Team Leader, and young people in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • We recruit Residential Support Volunteers from all walks of life ranging from working professionals to tertiary students with the requirement that they are eager to make a difference in young people’s lives.
  • First Aid certification. 
  • Knowledge of the Advantage Thinking approach and philosophy.

Applicants will be required to undergo a pre-employment safety screening process as part of the MCM selection process. Appointments to MCM roles will be subject to the following safety screening checks (as applicable to the role): National (and International if applicable) Police Check (which includes Proof of Identity Check), Victorian Employee Working with Children Check, Qualification Verification Check, Employment History Check, NDIS Worker Screening Check, Right to Work in Australia and current and valid driver licence. All costs associated with safety checks (except National Police Check) will be at applicants’ expense. MCM employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 consistent with the Victoria public health orders regarding COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Procedures and applicants will be required to present acceptable proof of their vaccination status as part of their application.
