About the organisation

The Hester Hornbrook Academy (HHA) is an Independent School, run by Melbourne City Mission (MCM), that provides programs for young people who have or are at risk of, disengaging with education. We deliver the VCAL at Foundation, Intermediate and Senior level and offer our students access to a range of VET courses.

The Hester Hornbrook Academy operates from multiple locations across Melbourne, with each class supported by an Educator and a Youth Worker who work in partnership to deliver the education program and support our students. Our students are aged between 15 and 25 and are referred to the school from a range of Community Service providers and mainstream schools.

The young people who attend HHA may present with multiple barriers to engaging in education, including challenging behaviours. Students present with a wide range of academic abilities and both Educators and Youth Workers work together to support students to achieve the goals that they set for themselves and reach towards their academic potential.

About the role

The Hester Hornbrook Academy is in an exciting time of expansion and currently seeking two full-time Classroom Educators in an ongoing capacity.

The Hester Hornbrook Academy Educator will form a part of an education team and be the primary teacher for their designated program/classroom. With the support of an Educator and a Youth Worker working closely and collegiately in every classroom, we aim to reconnect disengaged young people through a combination of learning and wellbeing support.

A primary focus of the Educator is on the planning, preparation and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes, along with teaching a range of students/classes. This will include contributing to, and in some cases leading, innovation, curriculum development and demonstrating a range of best practice approaches within our setting.  Educators will use student data to inform teaching approaches which enable targets related to improving student learning outcomes to be achieved.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Organising and implementing a teaching and learning program in accordance with VCAL curriculum and registration requirements
  • Completion of student assessments
  • Participation in a collegiate decision making process in relation to curriculum development and implementation
  • Ensure services are delivered within the framework of HHA’s policies and procedures, legislative requirements, and meet the relevant service standards.
  • All employees are required to comply with the Child Safe Standards.

Skills & experience include but are not limited to :

Essential

  • VIT Registration
  • Previous experience delivering VCAL or similar curriculum
  • Ability to work as part of an integrated team
  • Knowledge of the legislative requirements when working with at risk young people and an understanding of the requirements for ensuring child safety
  • Resilience

Desirable

  • Experience in a flexible learning setting
